Union of British Columbia selects SecuGen EyeD biometric
devices for 2,000-seat implementation for online authentication
Markham,
Ontario, Canada (March 27, 2001) - SecuGen Canada today
announced that Credit Union Central of British Columbia
(Central) has selected SecuGen's EyeD Hamster biometric
device for authentication to its Central Security Portal.
Biometric
security is a key priority for Central. "It allows
us to combine the high security and operational efficiencies
needed in the financial services industry today,"
said Oscar van der Meer, associate vice-president of technology
services, Credit Union Central.
"We expect that it will increase the security
level of our applications as well as reduce support and
networking cost and improve operations."
Five
hundred devices will ship this week, marking the first
phase of a 2,000 seat rollout that is to be completed
by December 31, 2001.
This installation follows a 50 unit pilot project
that began late last year.
"The
implementation at Central represents an important milestone
for both SecuGen and the commercial biometrics industry
as one of the largest biometric technology rollouts in
North America," said Anthony LaMantia, director of
strategic planning and key accounts, SecuGen Canada.
Andrew
Szego, President and COO of SecuGen Canada further remarked,
"SecuGen Canada is thrilled to be working with Credit
Union Central of British Columbia on the introduction
of biometric authentication to its Central Security Portal.
Central is one of the first financial institutions
in the world to offer this level of security and convenience
to member credit unions and key corporate partners."
Central
Security Portal is a gateway to a large array of (financial)
applications provided by Central, which is used by staff
of credit unions and corporate clients across Canada.
It allows for integration of these applications
from a user's point of view and provides greater flexibility
and security for network access.
Biometrics
is the measurement of an individual's unique physical
or behavioral characteristics.
SecuGen's fingerprint recognition scanners are
integrated into hardware applications and computer peripherals,
such as the EyeD Hamster.
These devices rely on a characteristic unique to
each individual - in this case, a fingerprint - which
acts like a digital password that cannot be stolen or
forgotten.
International
Data Corporation projects that the market for fingerprint
scanning technology, the most commonly used biometric
method, will grow from $66 million (US) in 1999 to $991.3
million in 2004. IDC
projects revenues for the biometrics industry will reach
$1.8 billion by 2004.
