Biometrics at heart of collaboration between SecuGen and Autostar

Compact fingerprint recognition module from SecuGen provides TouchStar terminals with fast, positive identification capabilities for on-site or remote applications.

San Jose, CA (March 13, 2000) - SecuGen Corporation, a leading global developer and manufacturer of biometric fingerprint imaging devices, today announced the integration of SecuGen's patented fingerprint recognition module into Autostar Technology's new TouchStar security product, a fully-integrated access security system with fingerprint ID reader, keypad, real-time clock, LCD screen and communications port. Autostar Technology, based in Singapore, is a leading Biometric and SmartCard solution provider.

The SecuGen fingerprint ID module incorporated in the TouchStar terminals reads and builds an encrypted data description of a person's fingerprint, a biometric characteristic that is unique to that individual.

The TouchStar terminal is a compact unit that utilizes SecuGen's advanced security technology to authenticate each user.

The TouchStar can now replace badges, swipe cards, PINs or passwords.  Only those users whose fingerprint is verified can gain access or control to secured areas or devices. It can be configured for completely independent operation, or with local or networked security systems. The TouchStar also performs as a time and attendance management system with optional software.

"The integration of our fingerprint recognition module into TouchStar's unique terminals showcases the versatility of SecuGen's technology as a complete product design and engineering solution wherever user authentication, security and durability are concerns," stated Sean Price, OEM Sales Manager.

The advantage of SecuGen's technology, for Autostar, is that the ID module works in conjunction with SecuGen's superior minutiae-based encryption algorithm. The algorithm processes each user's unique fingerprint record as a secure, encrypted data file. Its small size allows integration into almost any hardware configuration, and has a patent-pending coating strong enough to withstand physical impact, scratches and extreme weather conditions. Using the SEIR (Surface Enhanced Irregular Reflection) technology, even dry or low resolution fingerprints can be enrolled and verified. In addition, SecuGen's optical based technology is immune to electrostatic discharge. As a result, TouchStar terminals can be put to work with high reliability in the field, factory or chemical plant environments, as well as offices and stores.

Biometrics is an automated technology that recognizes an individual based on his or her physical characteristics. For those concerned with privacy issues, the algorithm software encrypts and stores the fingerprint template data in a format different than the AFIS (Automated Fingerprint ID Systems), widely used for criminal justice purposes. Instead, each individual's fingerprint data template is stored as an encrypted file and is not linked to any other personal (or personnel) data that may be on a PC or information system. Individuals are positively verified in less than one second.

The compact and rugged SecuGen modules are available for PC-based or stand-alone applications. Developer's Kits are available for customized biometric control solutions such as: Physical Access Control, Time and Attendance Systems, ATMs, Vending Machines, Document and Bank Vaults, PC Peripherals and Telecommunications, in addition to Networking/Enterprise Solutions such as Online Banking, E-commerce and Online Trading.
